Two young women were arrested in Iran after the broadcast of a video in which they danced to celebrate the arrival of the Persian New Year, local media announced on Saturday.
The video of these two young women dancing near Tajrish Square, a popular place in northern Tehran, has gone viral on social networks in recent days.
“Tehran prosecutor ordered the arrest of two women who broke social norms by dancing in Tajrish
,” Tasnim news agency reported.
These two young women were dressed as Hadji Firouz, a folkloric character dressed in red whose dance and songs announce the arrival of Nowrouz, the Iranian New Year which begins on March 20 this year.
Islamic law in force in Iran prohibits mixed dancing or dancing by single women in public.

Numerous videos of women dancing in public places, particularly in the metro, have gone viral in Iran in recent months, after the protest movement which shook Iran at the end of 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman 22-year-old arrested by the moral police for non-compliance with the strict dress code in force in the country.
