With this morning's bad weather and rain, a river of mud flooded Via Solimena in Naples, one of the two streets in Vomero already affected by the sinkhole of February 21st.
The basements of the buildings, commercial premises and apartments at street level were flooded by muddy water and debris.
Residents ran into the street alarmed by what was happening and began to empty the premises without success.
There was also disruption in nearby Via Morghen where four people were injured due to the sinkhole in February.
It would have been the collapse of a sewer pipe upstream from the sinkhole on February 21st that caused the wave of mud and debris.
Rescue teams were on site: fortunately no one was injured but there was still damage and inconvenience.
"There have been water leaks upstream from the sinkhole in recent days. There was immediate intervention with a bypass with pumps to prevent the leak from continuing", said the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi.
Manfredi announced that inspections will be carried out "and action will be taken to ensure that this further leak can be eliminated by intervening on a sewerage system that is more than a hundred years old".
The priority of the interventions must be for "those historic sewers of the city".
It is necessary to put in place "a plan, first of all of knowledge, and then of intervention" especially for the historical ones where it is likely that "it will be necessary to make replacements".
Two explosions were heard by the residents of Vomero.
The loud noise, according to what was learned, was caused by the 'explosion' of some shutters of shops invaded by water.
