But this October 12, 2023, Iranian theologian Sedigheh Vasmaghi is on edge.

She has just learned that a girl from her country, Armita Garavand, 16, is in hospital, between life and death, after having apparently been beaten in the metro because she had removed her compulsory veil.

One more victim, one victim too many, of the Islamic Republic a year after the start of the “Women, Life, Freedom” uprising triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, violently attacked by the police because of an ill-fitting headscarf.

Shaken, Sedigheh Vasmaghi grabs her smartphone and activates her camera.

“Impossible to remain silent when girls like Armita and Mahsa lose their lives because of a poorly worn headscarf (…) The veil has no justification in Islam

,” she says in one breath, in knowingly failing to put on her hijab.

The video, immediately published and relayed on social networks, had the effect of a bomb.

This is the first time that a woman from the religious inner circle has openly spoken out against the dress code imposed for four decades by the Shiite power.
