A forest worker tackles a tree with a chainsaw: Resistance is becoming more and more common when trees are felled.

But some have to go because they are a safety hazard, for example.

Trees had to be felled in the Glonnner “Felzgarten”.

The excitement is great.

Now the nature conservation authority is checking

Glonn - The tree at the topping-out ceremony, the Christmas tree, the maypole - the relationship between people and the tree has always been special - not just since Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) hugged a trunk for the photographers a few years ago.

In times of climate change, the love for trees seems to have become even more intense, as we know about their important role as CO2 storage and reliable oxygen suppliers.

The love is so great that there are regular outcries among the population when someone somewhere puts a chainsaw on a trunk.

The latest example of the ongoing conflict comes from the market town of Glonn.

The Nature Conservation Union is getting upset here.

For weeks he has been receiving “indignant messages about tree felling,” according to a press release from the local group. It refers to what they see as “rigorous deforestation” in the so-called “Felzgarten” and south of the sewage treatment plant, just before Piusheim.

Suspicion: More trees felled than allowed

In the “Fur Garden” area, the Federal Nature Conservation Association sees the felling of trees as a necessary measure to maintain or restore safety on the footpath.

At least some of the fellings.

Because he also says: More trees were removed here than were discussed at an on-site visit last September with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the district office.

A suspicion that Frank Burkhardt, head of the authority, also seems to have.

In any case, at the request of the Ebersberger Zeitung, he announced that he would investigate the case.

If the suspicion in the “fur garden” and south of the sewage treatment plant, where there is private agricultural land, is confirmed, fines and the ordering of replacement planting will be due.

Church Foundation: Trees were sick, some even dead

The property on “Pelzgartenweg” belongs to the Glonn Church Foundation.

Johann Wolf speaks for them.

As administrative manager of the parish association, he takes care of, among other things, the real estate of the church foundations.

Wolf told the Ebersberger Zeitung that the trees on the affected property were ash trees, many of them were sick (ash shoot dieback), and some were already dead. At the end of November last year, two ash trees fell on the building on a neighboring property and damaged the house.

“The market town of Glonn subsequently referred to our traffic safety obligations in a letter,” says Wolf, who points out that the playground of the parish kindergarten is in the immediate vicinity.

Due to the ash dieback, the trees were removed after a discussion with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

The residents welcomed the measure, says Wolf, pointing out that the market town does not have a tree protection ordinance.

He is surprised that those who are now criticizing loudly did not seek a conversation with him before “writing a statement to the press.”

Glonn has no tree protection regulations

The Glonner Greens would like to have a tree protection ordinance, as exists in some places, but not in all municipalities in the district, says Sigi Bertolan.

He sits on the local council for the Greens and is also active in the local nature conservation association.

The group had considered submitting a corresponding application.

But then they gave up on it.

During a preliminary inquiry in the local council, it became clear “that there would be no chance of a majority for a tree protection ordinance,” says Bertolan.

Mayor Josef Oswald (CSU), who is currently on vacation, emphasizes that the market town itself has nothing to do with the felling operations that have been criticized.

As for the trees along the Glonn to Haslach, he was told “that the beaver felled most of them”.

According to the town hall boss, there was a risk situation on the church foundation's property.
