Highlights: For a three-digit million sum: A wooden house more than 50 meters high is being built in Nuremberg. A large part of the new high-rise building will be made of wood. Less greenhouse gas emissions through wooden construction. The heating is powered by geothermal energy, photovoltaics and district heating. By the way, it won't just be the “UmweltHaus” - an entire district with apartments, a daycare center, a student dormitory and commercial space is planned around the building.

Building, but sustainably: This goal is the focus of a construction project in Nuremberg.

A large part of the new high-rise building will be made of wood.

Nuremberg – There are quite a few wooden houses in Bavaria.

But a high-rise building made of wood is an absolute rarity.

But something like this is currently being built in Nuremberg.

The building already has a name: “UmweltHaus”.

In keeping with the client, the environmental bank – this is a financial institution that exclusively finances ecological projects with its customer deposits.

Less greenhouse gas emissions through wooden construction

Ecological: that is also the keyword for building made of wood.

So from a renewable, natural raw material.

This construction method should also emit fewer greenhouse gases, which have a negative impact on the environment and climate.

However, the house will not be made entirely of wood; rather, it will be a so-called hybrid construction, some of which also uses concrete.

“We actually wanted to build everything out of wood,” architect Ingrid Spengler told

Bayerischer Rundfunk

, “but that doesn’t work because of the fire protection regulations in Germany.”

According to a spokesman for the environmental bank, the costs of the construction project would be in the lower three-digit million range.

Would a pure concrete building have been cheaper?

“This question did not arise because, in accordance with our company philosophy, we wanted to set a good example and build sustainably,” explains press spokesman Florian Schultz when asked: “A conventional building made of concrete would have been the wrong choice against this background.”

Energy supply through geothermal energy, photovoltaics and district heating

The energy needs of the building should also be met in an environmentally friendly manner.

The heating is powered by geothermal energy, photovoltaics and district heating.

“The electricity supply is largely provided by photovoltaic modules and is efficiently supplemented with electricity from a combined heat and power plant powered by bio natural gas,” says the environmental bank.

By the way, it won't just be the “UmweltHaus” - an entire district with apartments, a daycare center, a student dormitory and commercial space is planned around the building.

The 50 meter high house is scheduled to be finished in 2025, the quarter is expected to be completed in 2026.
