The highest natural elevation in Munich is an absolute insider tip.

This mountain has an exciting history and invites you to go on an idyllic hike.

Munich – If asked about the highest mountain in Munich, quite a few people would immediately name the Olympic Mountain.

This is certainly due to the fact that it is much more prominent in the cityscape than the actual highest mountain in the Isar metropolis.

The latter is located far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, in an idyllic location in the southern district of Solln - and is called Warnberg.

Located around 580 meters above sea level, it is a good 15 meters higher than the Olympic Mountain.

Various theories about the origin of the name Warnberg

According to the Sollner booklets,

the Warnberg was first mentioned in a document

in 1185. The origin of its name certainly gives rise to speculation.

On the one hand, there is the theory that the name comes from a lookout or watchtower that stood on the mountain.

On the other hand, it is believed that the hill was named after a certain Warin.

He was a Franconian nobleman who married the Swabian noblewoman Haddelind in 750.

And she in turn is said to have received the Warnberg as a dowry.

According to muenchen.de,

a castle was built on the Warnberg in the 12th century

.

The estate was also built a little later.

In the 16th century the property went to the Jesuits, who had the manor house built.

It is not known exactly when the castle was demolished.

Before the Warnberg Monastery became the property of the Caritas Association of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising in 1987, it was last run by the “Sisterhood of Mary of Consolation”.

There has also been a private secondary school on Warnberg since 2012.

Hike can be combined with Forstenrieder Park or Pullach

Even if some mountain enthusiasts wouldn't even lace up their hiking boots for a 580 meter high mountain, it's worth making an exception for Warnberg.

If just going up the mountain and back down isn't challenging enough, you can combine the tour with a walk through the nearby Forstenrieder Park.

A detour to Pullach in the Isar Valley, not far away, is also possible.
