The Green MdL Johannes Becher has decidedly too few women when it comes to the culture prize.

He demanded that more female candidates be nominated.

District

- On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Freising Green MP, Johannes Becher, pointed out what he considered to be a "remarkable discrepancy" in the district's culture award.

Since 1982, the Freising Culture Prize has only been awarded to four women, including only one in the last 20 years, Petra Lewi in 2017.

If you also include the funding and recognition awards, 87 men or male-led groups were honored by the district, while only 32 women or initiatives that were led by a woman or had an all-female staff were honored.

40 groups are mixed gender.

“Why do so many fewer women receive awards?” asks Johannes Becher.

“Women in Freising are certainly no less creative in culture than men.

However, they and their successes do not seem to be as present as those of the men.”

There are many creative women from the district, for example the young Freising singer Belli, who is nominated for the SZ Tassilo Prize, or the narrative artist Simone Saitenfeder.

You can't ignore singer-songwriter Lisa Fitzek when you talk about Freising's cultural scene.

The visual arts also have top-class creators in Freising: Dietlinde Swienty, Heidrun Hee, Markéta Lübben and Gabriele Winter-Bermel together form the artists' association “Die Feder”.

Becher suggests starting with the nomination process and suggesting more female cultural workers for the prize in the future.

“Equality and visibility for women in our society concerns us all.

Let’s work together to ensure that the Culture Prize becomes more female in the coming years.”

This weekend the culture prize goes to Michael Deppisch for his outstanding work as an architect in the Freising district.

The Hörgertshauser marching band, the artist Ifeanyi Christian Okolo and the art educator Hans Werner Oswald received the recognition awards.

The sponsorship award goes to Johannes Wiedenhofer.

Johannes Becher congratulates the award winners and emphasizes: “These are wonderful award winners and the artistic contribution of men to the Freising cultural scene will certainly not be diminished by more female award winners in the future - quite the opposite.

Instead, our cultural landscape is becoming more diverse and the female perspective is becoming more visible – an added value for all of us!” ft
