Important safety and restoration interventions, 25 years after the last ones, on approximately 30 monumental funerary buildings of the 200 tombs that can be visited, and the related decorative devices (paintings, stuccos, mosaics, marbles);

new measures to improve the use and accessibility of the site of approximately 2 hectares, with a view to increasing its valorisation and knowledge, also with the provision of installing new information panels;

and again, to meet the conservation needs of the heritage, the restoration of full functioning of the "wellpoint" drainage system, equipped with around 99 sensors, which allows us to avoid flooding of the tombs in the event of a rise in the water table.

These are the objectives at the center of the significant restoration and valorisation project implemented by the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park for the Porto Necropolis, in the heart of Isola Sacra, one of the five archaeological sites in the Fiumicino area, next to the Imperial Ports of Claudius and Trajan, the Basilica of Sant'Ippolito, the Ship Museum and the so-called Baths of Matidia (owned by the Lazio Region).

    The interventions, thanks to financing from CIPE funds of almost 2 million euros, assigned to the Park by the Ministry of Culture, began in April 2023 and are now nearing completion, with completion estimated by summer 2024. The complex project of interventions underway at the Necropolis is led by the archaeological official, scientific director of the site, Cristina Genovese.

"We are intervening with a major project to secure and restore the tombs that make up the Necropolis - the director of the archaeological park of Ostia antica, Alessandro D'Alessio, explains to ANSA -. There are direct restoration interventions on the monuments but also important operations to remove the causes of degradation, in particular on the groundwater drainage system, to avoid subsequent flooding. Together with the redoing of all the information system panels, this will lead to greater usability of the site itself. We are also trying to work to further spread knowledge of this place and of the other archaeological areas in the Fiumicino area, since they remain a little outside the main circuits of visitors and tourists: with the Municipality of Fiumicino and with Anas we are working for the positioning of a series of road information signs indicating the presence of these sites and how to reach them. The biggest challenge, then, that awaits us for the next few years will be the interaction with public transport to reach the archaeological sites and the Ship Museum" .
