Associate and doctor in history, member of the Academy of Overseas Sciences and professor of contemporary history at the University of Lorraine, Julie d'Andurain offers a work which shows, at the hinge of political history and of military history, how the “Coloniale”, from 1900, was not only a military instrument of the Republic, but also a symbol of French sovereignty.

The infantry (porpoises) or artillery (bigors) units which originally formed the colonial troops - armored vehicles and paratroopers would come later - belonged neither to the Navy nor to the Army of Africa, and their staff were not necessarily men of color.
