The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, said yesterday (Saturday) that he will propose that the parliament recognize a Palestinian state.

"I will propose that Spain recognize the Palestinian state," Sanchez said during a human rights conference in Bilbao.

"I do this out of moral belief, for a just cause and because this is the only way in which the two countries, Israel and Palestine, can live together in peace."

Sanchez, the leader of the Socialist ruling party, joins other European leaders and government officials who have said that they will consider recognizing a Palestinian state in light of their frustration with the impasse in the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, and the positions of the government in Jerusalem.

French President Emmanuel Macron said last month that Paris's recognition of a Palestinian state was not "taboo", and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that Britain might recognize it after the war between Israel and Hamas ends.

Sanchez, whose criticism of Israel during the war worsened relations between the countries, said that his position regarding the conflict in the Gaza Strip is very similar to his country's support for Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion more than two years ago.

He emphasized that Spain demands "respect of international law from Russia and Israel, the cessation of violence, recognition of two states and the arrival of humanitarian aid to Gaza."

His words were said at a time when aid shipments were on their way to Gaza against the background of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, and the difficulties in bringing it in by land.

The United States is preparing to establish a naval dock on the shores of Gaza, through which aid will be delivered, at the same time as airdropping food in cooperation with Arab countries.
