Dahlias can brighten up any garden.

However, you should not plant the plants too early after winter to avoid risks.

The days are getting longer again, the temperatures are rising: spring, with a lot of gardening work to do, is just around the corner.

However, the fact that the cold season is not completely over at the beginning of March is shown by repeated drops in temperature, especially at night.

A clear warning signal for plant lovers who want to slowly prepare their beds for warmer days.

If you plant your plants too early, you run the risk that they may fall victim to frost.

Of course, this also applies to the popular dahlias, which normally bloom in late summer.

Attentive garden lovers carefully dug up the tubers in the fall and stored them frost-free in the basement at four to eight degrees during the cold periods.

Ideally, the tubers were covered with moistened sand to prevent them from becoming moldy or drying out.

The NDR recommends wooden boxes lined with newspaper or plastic bags with large air holes that are hung up as containers.

It may be that the tubers sprout again in the cellar.

No problem, these are shortened again before planting out.

According to NDR,

the tubers go back into the garden

at the end of April and beginning of May - in the soil that is as moist as possible.

Don't worry: the Ice Saints won't be a problem.

Because the last frosts can no longer harm the dahlias, like the early bloomers, for example.

Plant a thin wooden stick together with the dahlia tubers

If you plant the tubers in your bed at the beginning of May, you may be able to enjoy the first flowers as early as the beginning of July.

When planting the tubers, also insert a one meter long, thin wooden stick into the soil.

This can later support the heavy dahlia flowers, advises

After the tubers have been placed in the hole in the ground, cover them with two to three finger widths of soil.

The deeper the tubers are planted, the lower the risk of frost in autumn.

However, flowering will start later.

If there is another chance of frost after planting - for example due to the Ice Saints - you should protect the tubers with a winter fleece or with buckets.
