"Stop the New Traffic Code" is the name of the mobilization that will be held in numerous Italian cities until March 12 against the reform of the Highway Code desired by the Minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, now under discussion in Parliament.
The initiative starts from the #Città30Subito platform, which is joined by numerous associations and activists from all over Italy.
Events are planned in Bologna, Turin, Milan, Padua, Florence, Modena, Rome, Naples, Lecce, Perugia, Varese.
"The reform is proposed 'to save lives on the streets' - Fiab (Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation), which adheres to the platform, writes in a statement -, but in essence it prefigures the continuation of the massacre. In fact, it severely limits the autonomy of action of the municipal administrations , attacks and weakens restricted traffic zones, pedestrian areas, regulated parking, electronic controls and cycling mobility".
"The reform proposal on the one hand promotes "showcase measures" - continues the Fiab -, such as the tightening of certain penalties or the easing of limitations for new drivers, and on the other it winks at those who systematically violate the rules. the conditions for the protection of those who are most vulnerable and coexistence between the different users of the city is weakened. Ineffective and harmful measures, which do not improve the current rules, and even worsen the situation".
