There was something new at this year's Freising Culture Prize award ceremony: an architect was honored for the first time.

Freising

– The culture prize of the Freising district has been awarded since 1982.

On Sunday, District Administrator Helmut Petz brought a total of five award winners onto the stage in the auditorium of the Camerloher-Gymnasium, all of whom have made a special contribution to the cultural life of the district and who could not have been more different.

The excitement in advance: On International Women's Day, the Green Party member of the state parliament, Johannes Becher, criticized the fact that far too few women received the important district award.

According to his calculations, there have only been four award winners to date.

Proud winners: On Sunday there was a main prize, three recognition prizes and a sponsorship prize for actors who have made outstanding contributions to cultural life in the Freising district: In addition to architect Michael Deppisch, artists and drummer Ifeany Christian Okolo, painter Hans Werner Oswald, the The Hörgertshausen marching band and the composer Johannes Wiedenhofer received awards.

“We did research,” Petz explained to the FT before the event and also gave a number.

“44 percent of the award winners are women,” according to his knowledge, which is based on a calculation by Feiler.

“I counted everything.

“Groups also receive the prize, and of course there are women there too,” explained Feiler - in total he came to 44 percent.

“Nevertheless, more women simply need to be suggested,” was his conclusion.

“Above all, culture gives us moments of happiness”

In his opening speech, he formulated what is most important to Petz: “We are committed to promoting culture because art and culture inspire us and give us an identity.

Above all, culture gives us moments of happiness.” And this year there was something new, because while in the past 40 years the cultural prizes went exclusively to the areas of literature, fine arts or music, this year an architect was chosen brought to the stage: Michael Deppisch.

Feiler explained the reason: “Architectures are a powerful cultural asset that constantly influences us – you cannot put away buildings like you can books or instruments.”

Around 60 buildings designed by Deppisch can be found in the district, including the extraordinary Wohn im Obstgarten in Marzling, at the center of which is the Baroque barn.

“His architectures have an emotional quality.

They touch you,” said Feiler, praising the main prize winner.

Prize winner lets local celebrities drum up their drums

“I’m still surprised,” explained Ifeany Christian Okolo, because he never expected the recognition award.

For Feiler, Okolo is an important bridge builder between Africa and Europe and a “cultural catalyst”, someone who works in Nandlstadt with a chainsaw and sandpaper on fascinating, often larger-than-life works that can also be found in museums.

But because Okolo is also an artist for whom music is important, he then invited local celebrities onto the stage for a drumming course, including Petz, the cultural advisor Susanne Günther, the RPWL musicians Kalle Wallner and Yogi Lang, as well as the mayor of Nandlstadt Gerhard Betz.

Another recognition award went to the art educator and painter Hans Werner Oswald, who, according to Feiler, has been touchingly continuing the legacy of Georg Hummitzsch, the founder of the Moosburg painting school, since 1982.

“Oswald,” says Feiler, “approaches people very sensitively.

He’s always concerned with the matter at hand, never with his own external image.”

Ensemble performed before Franz Beckenbauer

When it came to the third recognition award, things got louder: the Hörgertshausen marching band received it.

Since it was founded in 1951, it has performed around 2,500 performances, including in front of the recently deceased football legend Franz Beckenbauer.

“The marching band brings people together, builds bridges and gives young people access to music,” said Feiler in his laudatory speech.

The Langenbach composer Johannes Wiedenhofer has already won many important awards; he received the sponsorship award from the district on Sunday.

How overwhelming his talent but also his success was was shown in a recording of his composition “Schnell”, which was brought to the stage by the BR Symphony Orchestra in the Munich Residence this year.
