Hundreds of visitors came to the performance of Carmina Burana in the gymnasium of the Oberhaching elementary school.

It was the start of the 1275th birthday of the Oberhaching community.

Oberhaching – The community of Oberhaching is celebrating its 1275th birthday this year, with events spread throughout the year.

A lively start was the performance of Carmina Burana in the gymnasium on Saturday evening under the direction of Ricarda Geary - after which the applause was almost as long as one of the 25 songs performed.

The approximately 300 people involved really spared no effort.

Three choirs took part in the implementation of Carl Orff's most famous work, and of course the chamber orchestra was also involved, and three soloists and musicians from Munich were also hired.

Oberhaching's mayor Stefan Schelle said with a smile that they had recruited all the choirs “that are in high school” for the evening.

The little ones from the children's choir stood on the gallery, waving their parents and siblings downstairs.

In the gymnasium, only the very last of the 27 rows of chairs were no longer fully occupied; several hundred visitors must have come to the performance of Carmina Burana.

Performers should not have feared comparison with professionals

What the visitors experienced and heard was truly impressive - the performers shouldn't have feared comparison with professionals.

The Carmina Burana didn't do anything easy.

Some of the melodies are a little special - and then the lyrics are in Latin.

A reason, by the way, to like the piece.

Because the National Socialists couldn't stand it because of the language alone.

As is well known, Orff did not so much write the whole thing himself as compile it and set it to music - from a collection of over 200 song and drama texts in Middle Latin, some also in Middle High German and Old French, which was found in the Benediktbeuern monastery in 1803.

He picked 24 and gave them appropriate melodies and arrangements.

The themes in Carmina Burana are correspondingly broad.

It's about spring as well as about love, including mocking verses and rumbling drinking songs.

The series of songs is framed by the invocation of fate: “O Fortuna”.

“It is not possible to escape the rousing, almost intoxicating effect of Orff's music,” the organizers wrote in the program booklet - and in Oberhaching that was exactly what came true on Saturday evening.

Children in the audience also followed what was being offered with the greatest attention.

There was a brief interruption once because one of the singers had gotten sick.

It was a bit stuffy in the gym, the fire department then opened the doors and things continued.

Visitors didn't want to stop clapping: applause for director Ricarda Geary

After a total of two and a half hours of program, which opened with a concert for cello and orchestra conducted by Gerold Huber and with soloist Florian Stepp, the visitors didn't want to stop clapping for a long time.

Ricarda Geary beamed in all directions, receiving flowers and passing them on.

And Mayor Schelle stated that it was very fortunate for the community of Oberhaching that Geary had recently received a property in the local project.

“She’s definitely not moving away now,” he said.
