For or against? Ile-de-France and Oisiens residents living near Paris-Orly, Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, Paris-Le Bourget and Beauvais airports

“For your health and in the face of the climate emergency, do you want flights to be reduced and banned at night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. at Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, Paris-Orly, Paris-Le Bourget airports? and Beauvais-Tillé?

» The question is addressed to more than 2 million inhabitants of the Paris region and the Oise.

They are invited to respond from March 11 to 24*, via the Internet or by submitting a ballot to participating town halls.

This citizen consultation, a first, is relayed by 142 municipalities in Île-de-France and Oise in order to reduce air pollution.

“The vote is open to people aged 16 and over,” underlines Gérard Bouthier, from the Drapo collective (Defense of residents of Paris-Orly airport).

This follows the 75 municipalities which voted in 2023 for a motion to demand a reduction in air traffic.

And in 2022, we gathered in front of the Ministry of Transport with the associations defending residents of Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle and Le Bourget.

This citizen vote is a new phase which directly targets residents.

Sleep disorders, cardiovascular diseases…

Residents are the first to suffer from air pollution: sleep and concentration problems, cardiovascular diseases or learning difficulties can be caused by noise.

“Living under air corridors reduces life expectancy in good health by up to three years,” insist the associations defending residents of the four airport platforms in the Paris region and the Oise.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends eight hours of sleep,” continues Gérard Bouthier.

Establishing a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. would ensure this need.

» Currently, Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle does not have a curfew, Beauvais-Tillé has specific agreements with the Ryanair company, and that of Paris-Orly starts at 11:30 p.m.

The state is studying a measure to go down to 11 p.m.

But the airlines point to a financial loss.

A rally on March 20 in front of the Palais-Bourbon

“In the prevention and eco-design plan (PPE) of Paris-Orly, the objective is included to reduce noise pollution from overflights by 6 dB,” notes Sylvie Carillon, mayor (LR) of Montgeron (Essonne), very mobilized on the subject.

Establishing a curfew from 10 p.m. seems to us to be a good response to achieving this objective.

Knowing that the situation around Orly is very specific because it is the only airport built in an area which was already urbanized and dense.

I encourage Ile-de-France residents to speak out massively.

Elected officials and associations hope for a strong participation and then ask the government to act.

“On March 20, four days before the end of the consultation, we are organizing a gathering in front of the Palais-Bourbon with elected officials and administrators,” announces Gérard Bouthier, from the Drapo collective.

With the 142 participating municipalities, this represents nearly 2 million inhabitants and their health.
