Entering Ramadan this Monday, Muslims must observe a strict fast - from food and liquids, sexual relations - for a month, from dawn to sunset.
This “holy month” is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the profession of faith, prayer, alms and the pilgrimage to Mecca.
On this occasion, the 2,900 mosques and Muslim places of worship spread across France will experience a large turnout to attend ritual prayers, led by nearly 1,900 imams.
In France, this Ramadan 2024 is the last where “detached imams”, these religious people directly employed by their country of origin, mainly Algeria, Morocco and Turkey, will be able to officiate.
There are around 300 of them, a minority of the imams practicing on French soil.
They were targeted four years ago by Emmanuel Macron, who wanted to put an end to this system to limit the influence of “consular Islam”, in other words the political control of the Minister of Religion of the country of origin…
