They are smart, motivated, team players and now also award winners.

Students from Camerloher High School won important prizes with two projects.

Freising

– “Berlin, Berlin, we’re going to Berlin!” Many students at the Camerloher High School can shout.

Because of their extraordinary achievements, their creativity and their commitment outside of class, they won trips to the federal capital.

14 students from grades 8 to 11 took part in the takeoff gifted program.

“We write to particularly good students whether they want to take part,” explains project manager Jessica Zörr.

As part of this program, the young people went on a journey through the “nutrition jungle” for several months this school year with Zörr and teacher Elke Balzhäuser.

The young people summarized this trip and their results on the central question “What will we eat tomorrow?” in a seven-minute multimedia presentation.

This was so well received at the student competition for political education that they won the main prize for grades 8 to 12 - a week-long trip to Berlin after Pentecost with a big award ceremony and a visit to the Chancellery.

On tomorrow's plate

“What ends up on our plate every day is a very personal and global topic at the same time,” is how the presentation begins, for which students not only designed graphics, took photos, wrote, researched, laid out and recorded texts , but also tested a lot ourselves.

In addition to lectures from experts, the young people visited a food startup trade fair together, organized a cooking afternoon and tested alternative foods.

“During the lectures, we were often really excited to try something, but that wasn’t possible because the food wasn’t yet approved,” remembers one student.

They were allowed to test some other products and were thrilled, like a meatless burger, but others failed the taste test.

The takeoff participants agreed that the hardest part was to summarize all the information briefly and comprehensibly for the presentation.

If you want to know what will be on tomorrow's plate, you can come to the Uferlos Festival, for example.

“We can present our work here and tell you what we have achieved,” announces a student.

The camera hunter also wins with “body”.

A delegation from Camerjäger – the school’s student newspaper – was also allowed to go to Berlin, but a few weeks later.

For their “Körper” edition from 2022, the students received second place among the best school newspapers in Germany in the high school category.

The magazine is about body language, what happens in the body during puberty, ADHD, gender reassignment, beauty tips, favorite sports and much more.

This year, the students and their teachers Judith Reichardt and Veronika Eckl also won a special prize in the “Safety and Health in Focus” category from the German Statutory Accident Insurance.

And it is not the first time that the Camerloh school newspaper has received an award.

In 2021, the students won the Bavarian Ministry of Culture's newspaper making competition with the magazine “Liebe” and was also named the best school newspaper in Germany in the high school category.

“The trip to Berlin was canceled because of Corona,” says Eckl, disappointed.

The joy is even greater now.

“It makes me very proud that we won again and I’m really looking forward to Berlin,” says student Luise Wachtel.

Your classmates can only agree.

When you ask them why they enjoy working on the school newspaper, there is something they all have in common: “I really enjoy writing, and I also enjoy layout,” as one student puts it.

Teamwork, the joy of holding the finished product in your hands, letting your creativity run wild and going on trips together for reports are also mentioned as reasons why being a camera hunter is so much fun.

They are currently working on the text and layout of the next issue, which will come out in September.

The theme this time: home.
