Jens Fritz thinks people are driving too fast in the bus lane at Brüder-Scholl-Platz.

That's why the doctor put up an information board there.

He measured the speed with a sports radar device.

Clothing stores, medical centers, ice cream parlors and restaurants line the Zwilling-Scholl-Platz at Buchenau S-Bahn station.

The large paved area is designated as a pedestrian zone.

Only taxis, delivery people and public buses are allowed to drive through the square - but the latter always cause trouble.

Fürstenfeldbruck – Jens Fritz and his dental practice have been based in the so-called Blue House on Zwilling-Scholl-Platz since 2009.

And for just as long, a nuisance has been bothering him: in the lane along the building complex, the buses are practically rushing through, he says.

Dangerous situations

The buses come via the Kurt-Huber-Ring in the south of the square at the level of the cinema and then turn towards Zwilling-Scholl-Platz.

It is around 100 meters to the Blue House.

According to Fritz, the buses would pick up a lot of speed on this route.

Dangerous situations often arise for passers-by in the pedestrian zone.

“My daughter once ran out of the house as a toddler just as a bus was passing by,” reports Jens Fritz.

“I just caught her by the hand, otherwise it wouldn’t have ended well.”

Measure on your own

This is just one of many dangerous situations that the Bruck doctor, his employees, patients and neighbors experience on the square.

“The buses regularly travel through here at 30 to 50 kilometers per hour,” says Fritz.

He measured these speeds on his own - with a sports radar device that normally measures the speed of balls.

Previous discussions with the district office and police had been unsuccessful.

When he asked, the city told him that Fritz could purchase a radar measuring device like the one on Münchner Strasse himself.

The purchase costs here are 3,000 euros, says the Bruck doctor.

In short, better

After all: According to Fritz, the ÖM office of the district office once informed the bus companies that they were appealing to their drivers to drive more slowly in the pedestrian zone.

“The situation improved for a short time,” says Fritz.

But then it subsided again.

He and his employees would repeatedly ask the bus drivers about the excessive speed.

Without success.

“A bus driver once explained to me that he was allowed to drive 30 here,” reports Fritz.

Customer stopper

And Jens Fritz made another attempt to improve the situation.

He converted a so-called customer stopper - an advertising display like you see in front of shops - into an information board for passing bus drivers.

"Max.

10 km/h in the pedestrian zone,” it says.

A speed camera, a bus and a pedestrian zone sign are also shown.

The stand is located at the correct distance from the practice building, directly on the road.

“I don’t want to bully anyone,” emphasizes Fritz.

“But I think many people are not aware that they are driving in a pedestrian zone.” We have to appeal to the bus drivers’ common sense.

“Taxis, suppliers and delivery people also drive through there, but carefully.”

The problem is known in the town hall and the police.

When asked, police spokeswoman Nina Vallentin said the situation on site would be looked at over the next few weeks.

Broken bollards

For a long time you couldn't drive to Zwilling-Scholl-Platz because bollards blocked the way.

This was intended to protect passers-by from cars and trucks.

In the morning these bollards were lowered so that suppliers could drive to the shops.

The bus drivers had a pusher to lower the bollards.

But for some time now the bollards have been permanently sunk into the ground.

The reason: The system is defective, says a town hall spokeswoman.

Spare parts are still missing.

It is questionable whether the poles will be able to slow down the buses in the future when they work again, says Jens Fritz.
