Augsburg – A phosphorus bomb from the Second World War was discovered on the banks of the Lech in Augsburg.

The fire department reported on Tuesday, March 12th that a small fire on a gravel bank was initially reported the day before.

While investigating the scene of the fire, rescue workers came across a cylindrical object about 45 centimeters long, which was later identified as a phosphorus bomb.

The fire department stated that reddish-blue smoke and a sulphurous-sweet smell were emitted from the phosphorus bomb and that flames appeared on the bomb.

The explosive ordnance disposal service was able to recover the bomb and secure it in a special container.

A police spokeswoman was initially unable to clarify how the phosphorus bomb reached the banks of the Lech and ignited.

Rescue workers in Augsburg came across an unexpected find: a phosphorus bomb from World War II.

She emphasized that the discovery of such ordnance from the Second World War is not uncommon.
