Mayor Dieter Reiter has now opened “Munich’s most beautiful parking garage” in Neuperlach-Süd.

The new facility offers space for 770 vehicles.

“A parking garage was still missing from my opening portfolio,” joked Mayor Dieter Reiter, who always opens something – from public toilets to the new tram line.

Yesterday morning a parking garage was finally added in Neuperlach-Süd, not just any parking garage, but, as Reiter quotes: “Munich’s most beautiful parking garage”.

The new facility offers space for 770 vehicles; a parking space costs 1.50 euros per day.

The main purpose of the parking garage is to keep traffic away from the city center.

Cheap fee as an incentive for commuters

The mayor came to the outskirts of the city on Monday morning to officially open the new park-and-ride parking garage at the Neuperlach-Süd subway and S-Bahn station.

The building was created based on a design by the Viennese architectural firm Delugan-Meissl Architects in conjunction with Maisch Wolf Architects from Munich.

17,000 overlapping metal tiles over a height of 24 meters were installed, which not only guarantee attractive architecture but also sound insulation.

“We are probably the only city in Germany that holds parking garage competitions,” joked Reiter.

He is happy to now have such a nice parking garage in Munich, “even if the users just want parking spaces.”

The parking fee of 1.50 euros per day is incredibly cheap.

An incentive so that commuters - Munich has half a million every day - actually switch to public transport here on the outskirts of the city.

“We want to get the cars out of the city center, only those who urgently need to come in, for example people with limited mobility,” explained the mayor.

Mayor calls for ring out of parking garages around Munich

This would require a lot more parking garages at public transport hubs.

“We need a ring around Munich with such parking garages,” at least in all wind directions.

However, the city will not be able to solve this problem alone, “we need the surrounding area.”

We are already talking to districts and municipalities.

“Unfortunately not necessarily incredibly successful,” Reiter regretted.

The city would contribute financially, in terms of planning and with compensation.

So that people can switch, the city wants to make the parking garages on the outskirts more attractive.

Drivers should be shown via their navigation system whether and how many parking spaces are available where, how much they cost and when the connection to the city leaves.

“It’s technically possible, but it’s strictly regulated,” groaned the mayor.

The car manufacturers would already be there, but these discussions were also slow.

“We want to accelerate more so that in the end a few hundred fewer cars drive into the city center.” In addition, the parking garages would have to offer weather protection, brightness and security.

Photovoltaic system supplies electricity for the building

In addition to greenery, Neuperlach has a large PV system on the roof that supplies the electricity for the building.

Also for the 72 electric charging stations.

Another plus: you can book the parking space in Neuperlach from home or on the go via the Internet.

This works via license plate recognition, which will soon be used to switch to paperless parking.

The cameras also detect anyone who does not adhere to the 24-hour maximum parking time.

A fine of 35.70 euros will then be due.

“The strange amount arises from the VAT because it is subject to sales tax according to the EU,” explains Wolfgang Großmann, managing director of the municipal P+R GmbH, which operates the facility.
