Instagram displaces TikTok from the podium of the most downloaded apps in the world.
According to the analysis company Sensor Tower, downloads of the platform owned by Meta grew by 20% in 2023 while those of the chat owned by the Chinese company ByteDance increased by 4%.
The result, according to analysts, is due to the Reel short video format.
The Chinese app risks being banned in the United States if it does not dissociate itself from its parent company.
Tiktok was the most popular app from 2018 to 2022. Statistics from Sensor Tower - taken from the Financial Times - suggest that Metasta's photo-sharing platform has been successful in gaining new users thanks to short videos, a format launched in 2020 and taken borrowed from TikTok, a format that has captivated millions of Gen Z consumers.
According to analysts, there are signs that TikTok's growth has started to plateau for the first time since it launched in 2016. Instagram's monthly active users have reached 1 .47 billion, an increase of 13 million in the last quarter of 2023. Active TikTok users reached 1.12 billion, a decline of 12 million in the final three months of last year.
However, the latter app continues to get higher engagement: Its users spent an average of 95 minutes in the fourth quarter of last year, compared to 62 minutes on Instagram, 30 minutes on X and 19 minutes on Snapchat.
