The Alps cannot calm down: a large mudflow is blocking a road into the Ulten Valley.

Holidaymakers and locals have to take huge detours.

Meran – The Ultental is an insider tip for die-hard South Tyrol fans.

It is quiet there, in complete contrast to neighboring Meran and Vinschgau.

At the back of the upper Ulten Valley, the idyllic Fischersee and Grünsee at the foot of the Stilfserjoch massif beckon.

No large mountain railways disturb the natural experience in the region in Italy.

In contrast, heavy snowfalls had recently caused chaos in the Italian Alps.

Mure in South Tyrol (Italy): the masses of earth slid into the valley as the fire brigade watched

But a powerful mudslide occurred in this little paradise on Tuesday morning (March 12th).

Right at the entrance to the valley from Meran, the landslide at the Baumann Bridge near Eschenlohe Castle blocks the road.

The St. Pankraz volunteer fire department closed the transport connection, which is important for the valley's residents and its guests.

Shortly after 5 a.m., the St. Pankraz volunteer fire department received the alarm, according to

: A passer-by had observed how a tree at the Baumannbrücke construction site was slowly threatening to fall from a slope onto Federal Highway 9.

When the emergency services arrived, they saw that not only the tree, but also earth and rocks were slowly sliding onto the road.

The firefighters immediately closed the road and informed the state geologist, who assessed the situation on site.

Holidaymakers and locals have to take a 60 kilometer detour

“Fortunately no people were affected.

The clean-up work is ongoing, but the road remains closed for the time being,” the state fire brigade association wrote in a Facebook post.

However, the 4,500 residents of the Ulten Valley have to make do with a long-range diversion for the time being.

This leads over the side valley of Proveis and Deutschnonsberg into the Meran Basin - the Ultental can therefore initially only be reached via the 1363 meter high Mendel Pass via Kaltern and the 1518 meter high Gampen Pass.

This means a 60 kilometer detour to Meran.

Snow has recently fallen at lower altitudes in South Tyrol, the steep slopes have completely softened, causing mudslides like those in Ultental.

Several violent rockfalls were also triggered by rainfall.

Meanwhile, the construction of a new road is being discussed on Lake Garda because the entire mountain has become porous.
