Can a sausage manufacturer from Lower Bavaria continue to call and produce their “mini grilled sausages” that way?

According to the Nuremberg producers - no.

Now the court should decide.

Nuremberg – It’s all about the sausage – in the truest sense.

Because a Munich court is now supposed to decide whether the traditional Nuremberg bratwursts should be given a special status not only in terms of their name, but also in terms of their appearance.

A sausage producer from Geiselhörig in Lower Bavaria is currently producing sausages that look incredibly similar to the original.

Can bratwursts look like Nuremberg sausages if they come from Lower Bavaria?

No, says an association of Nuremberg sausage manufacturers, which has sued its competitor from Lower Bavaria because of this.

On Tuesday, March 12th, this dispute will take place before the Munich I Regional Court.

Manufacturer sees no violation

As the court announced, the Nuremberg association's lawsuit concerns the specific product presentation, the size of the sausages and also the name "Mini Rostbratwürstchen".

The name “Nuremberger Bratwürste/Nuremberger Rostbratwürste” is a “protected geographical indication” – a regulation that the Lower Bavarian sausage producer sees no violation of, according to the court.
