For most homeowners, heat pumps would be the first choice when replacing a heating system.

But many people decide against it for two main reasons.

Berlin - There is great uncertainty among homeowners.

Which technology is best suited for heating replacement for your own property?

A study by Prognos AG on behalf of the WWF shows that a heat pump is cheaper than a gas heater when compared realistically, i.e. taking factors such as government funding or rising CO₂ prices into account.

A useful life of 15 years was assumed.

However, the initial boom in demand for heat pumps has leveled off.

And more than twice as many gas heaters are still being installed.

There is much speculation about the reasons for this development.

The heat pump association cites political reasons such as capping or changing subsidies, which lead to uncertainty among customers.

The stabilization of oil and gas prices certainly also plays a role, while electricity prices remain higher.

The Energy Trend Monitor 2024 also sheds light on the matter. The survey shows that the majority of respondents would prefer the heat pump.

For 62 percent, the climate-friendly heat dispenser is the first choice when replacing a heating system.

Gas heating comes in second place at 48 percent, closely followed by biomass boilers.

43 percent would install wood heating and 36 percent would install oil heating.

Energy trend monitor 2024: Fluctuating electricity prices speak against a decision for heat pumps

But despite this popularity, significantly fewer people choose a heat pump.

Bureaucratic hurdles are cited as the main reason.

73 percent of those surveyed said that the funding conditions for replacing a heating system are not transparent enough.

The strongly fluctuating electricity prices prevent 60 percent from switching to heat pumps.

Consequently, 76 percent of those surveyed would like the electricity costs for heat pumps to be specifically reduced.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) also found in a recent study that heat pumps in single-family homes are the most environmentally friendly and economical source of energy.

The overall costs can be further reduced through photovoltaics for personal consumption.

In apartment buildings, switching to heat pumps or district heating is also cheaper than replacing the gas heating system.

The positive cost balance of heat pumps or district heating also applies to unrenovated and partially renovated old buildings, despite higher consumption and investment costs compared to old buildings that have been energetically renovated.
