Fasting during Ramadan is one of the most important foundations of Islam and takes place at a different time every year.
When does it end in 2024?
Munich – For many Muslims in Germany, the annual Ramadan fast began on the evening of March 10, 2024.
Believers abstain from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset.
Smoking or sexual intercourse are also not permitted.
The fast is then broken after sunset with a sacrament called iftar or fitoor.
Additionally, Muslims traditionally eat a pre-dawn meal known as sahur or Sehri before beginning their fast.
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, which form the foundations of how Muslims should live their lives.
At the beginning of the fasting month, Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke in a video message and spoke out in favor of a ceasefire in the Middle East.
Ramadan: Islamic fasting month depends on the lunar cycle
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and has a special meaning in Islam.
This month the first verses of the Koran are said to have been revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.

The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle.
Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon and lasts either 29 or 30 days.
In 2024, Ramadan is expected to last 30 days, with fasting beginning on the evening of March 10th and expected to end on April 9th.
The start of Ramadan is postponed by eleven days every year.
This is because the traditional Islamic calendar is calculated differently than the Christian Gregorian calendar, is only 354 days long and is based on the moon.
Therefore, the fasting month can take place in all seasons.
In 2023, Ramadan began on March 22nd and ended on April 20th.
Eid al-Fitr: After Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the Sugar Festival
When Ramadan ends after a lunar cycle, or about a month, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the sugar festival.
The festival is one of the most important for Muslims around the world.
In Bavaria, school children are exempt from classes so they can celebrate with their families.

Since it is a religious festival, it is customary for many families to start the sugar festival by visiting the mosque.
There is then a big banquet at home.
By the way, some Muslims are exempt from fasting, including children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, menstruating women, the sick and travelers.
