Artificial intelligence will bring challenges to societies, but at the moment the biggest concern remains the huge number of people without access to digital technologies.
This is the alarm from the ITU, the International Telecommunications Union which is part of the UN: it estimates that around 2.6 billion people around the world remain offline and cannot access the advantages of digital technology.
"They have never connected to the Internet - said the head of the agency Doreen Bogdan Martin - If you are not part of the digital world, then you are not part of the world of artificial intelligence. This is truly one of the greatest challenges of our generation ".
The United Nations aims to raise $100 billion by 2026 to close the global digitalization gap.
But Bogdan-Martin estimates that four times that amount would be needed to truly close the gap.
“The gap will be felt increasingly acutely with the spread of rapidly evolving generative artificial intelligence technology,” the UN official said.
