When a Moosburger looks out onto his terrace, a real monkey stands in front of him.

The man immediately acts in the right way.

Now the owner of the animal is being sought.

Moosburg

- This story begins as if it came from a Pippi Longstocking novel by Astrid Lindgren.

In fact, that's exactly how it happened at the weekend in Moosburg, as Jennifer Vogl from the Munich Reptile Sanctuary now reports: According to this, a resident of Uppenbornstrasse discovered a marmoset on his terrace while looking out of the window on Sunday around 6 p.m.

And the animal rights activist also gave the Moosburger a big compliment: “Instead of panicking, the man kept a cool head and used a banana to lure the marmoset into a dog transport cage and temporarily secure it there.”

The escaped monkey becomes a case for the Moosburg police

The man's next action was to pick up the phone: "After the successful rescue operation, the Moosburg police were first informed and the animal was then taken to the reptile rescue center in Munich," Vogl continues.

According to its own information, the organization has been looking after over 2,500 exotic animals in the heart of the state capital for 20 years.

Thomas Türbl, a specialist veterinarian at the station, explains: “The monkey does not appear neglected and at least makes a well-groomed and well-fed impression.” It is therefore hoped that the original owner will contact the organization as soon as possible.

“The responsible authorities have also already been informed, so the owner can perhaps be found through the necessary species protection notification,” says the veterinarian.

What happens to the monkey if no one comes forward?

But what happens if the owner cannot be identified?

“If no owner of the monkey comes forward, the animal will be treated as a regular lost property, and the authorities at the location where it was found must first cover the costs of accommodating the escaped monkey in an animal- and behavior-appropriate manner,” explain the experts.

There are already two more animals of the same species in the rescue station, “which can even be observed via a live stream”.

If no owner comes forward for the latest addition, the animal rights activists will look for sponsors and a suitable name for the escaped monkey.

It is not the first time recently that an exotic animal has made headlines in the Moosburg region: In August 2021, the police received a report that a kangaroo was hopping through the community walls.

And then, in April 2023, a flamingo appeared at the Moosburg Aquapark, among other places - and was even given a special nickname a little later.

Animal rights activists rely on donations

In connection with the strange animal discovery report on Sunday, those responsible for the non-profit organization Auffangstation für Reptilien, Munich eV, now point out that with over 1,500 rescued and rehomed animals every year, they are Germany's largest rescue center for exotic pets.

“Our specially trained animal keepers, veterinarians and biologists use their scientifically sound approach to ensure a sustainable improvement in the keeping conditions of reptiles and other exotic animals throughout Germany.” We are permanently dependent on donations.
