The Chief of Staff Major General Herzi Halevi is reconsidering appointing Major General Shaul Mofaz to chair an external committee that will investigate the events leading up to October 7, and to start the General Staff's investigations as soon as possible - this is what Walla learned.

The IDF denies the allegations.

The IDF spokesman's response to the Walla publication: "Contrary to the publication, the Chief of Staff has not appointed an external review committee, and at this stage there is no intention to begin such a process.

As long as a different decision is made, it will be published transparently to the public.

The IDF began an operational investigation last week, and its main purpose is learning."

Halevi caused an uproar in the political and Israeli system after he promoted a decision to establish an external committee headed by a former Chief of Staff to investigate the events of the war, and what preceded it. After sharp criticism of the move, which Defense Minister Yoav Galant was completely unaware of, despite the backing he gave to Halevi before the government, Halevi decided to suspend the decision.

Criticism began to be heard within the IDF against the Chief of Staff under the claim that there was a gentleman's agreement according to which during the war one does not engage in investigations, but in an effort to achieve the goals of the war, and that the investigations will only begin the day after.

The General Staff also expressed surprise at the decision that quickly went up and down from the agenda.

Then there was a turning point when the State Comptroller decided to open a series of investigations into the conduct of the army in what preceded October 7. The top of the army did not like the decision to investigate the IDF during the war.

The Chief of Staff met with the State Comptroller and together they established a working framework for transferring data and meetings. Sources involved in the process claim that the top of the IDF do not like the State Comptroller's high motivation to inspect the General Staff.
