"I've seen what happens after death and there's only one thing I remember clearly," said councilman and former mayor, Brett Biscoe, after he had a diabetic attack at home and found himself sedated and ventilated in the hospital for ten days.
The mayor of Truro, the capital of the county of Cornwall in southwest Britain, was rushed to hospital after suddenly collapsing at home due to an undiagnosed diabetic condition.
70-year-old Bret Biscoe was on the verge of death on his way to the hospital and said that he "didn't like what was there and came back from the dead."
After waking up from his coma Brett said he remembered certain aspects of his floor.
He remembers seeing himself with tubes coming out of him, while his doctors, wife and daughters are in the room.
He said he spent some time on the "other side" before coming back to life.
He told Cornwall Live: "I was dead. I spent some time on the other side, in total darkness. I didn't like the accommodation arrangements, as they say, so I came back."
He added: "I was in a controlled coma but I had no idea about the passage of time or what was really happening."
Although Brett does not believe in miracles, he said that when he left the hospital a woman approached him and told him that she was among the thousands of people who prayed for his safety.
He told her that he felt all the prayers and wishes when he was on the other side and thanked everyone who prayed for his safety, as well as the medical staff at the hospital where he was treated.
He said it was a combination of prayers, technology, skill and joy of life that brought him to this point.
Brett said that he was asked a lot about his near-death experience.
He replied: "I was asked if I had hallucinations or visions, but the answer to those questions is no. It was just dark in there. I was also asked this by some research people in the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, not much happened beyond that."
