In line with the message from the International Monetary Fund to the government of
Javier Milei
, the United States ambassador,
Marc Stanley
, celebrated the “economic reforms” of the ruling party, but
warned about their impact on the most needy sectors
.
“The United States is very interested in the economic reforms underway.
However, we are also concerned about the impact of economic reforms on the most vulnerable in society during this period of rapid reforms,” said Stanley, speaking this Tuesday before the traditional seminar of the
American Chamber of Argentina (Amcham)
, at the that ministers such as
Diana Mondino, Luis Caputo
, and the head of the Buenos Aires government
Jorge Macri
paraded and will parade ;
governors such as
Martín Llaryora (Córdoba) and Ignacio Nacho Torres (Chubut)
.
The businessmen with whom
Clarín
spoke during the 2024 edition of the annual Amcham meeting at the City Convention Center - which was opened by its president Facundo Minujín - were
willing to embrace the economic reforms
that Milei promises in the economy.
Even from the Chamber they predict “lower inflation” and a “salary reactivation” for May or June although they recognize a significant recession.
But the austerity plan, which the President accompanied by harsh attacks and even insults towards his critics, and the open support for Donald Trump in the electoral campaign despite signs of support from Biden, were on the lips of the attendees throughout the entire the rainy morning, which no one refrained from talking about due to the intensity and its devastation on the AMBA.
Days ago, the Director of Communications, Julie Kozack, said from Washington that from the Fund they saw an Argentina that was “making good progress” on the “path toward stabilization” that she observed as “difficult.”
In this sense, he considered that “efforts to support the most vulnerable segments of the population are a fundamental pillar of the program” and Kozack assured that it is “important that the burden of adjustment does not fall disproportionately on poor and working families.”
"Natural partners"
Stanley spoke at AmCham before Foreign Minister Diana Mondino did.
“
The United States and Argentina are natural partners
and are working to make that partnership more beneficial for the people of both countries,” she noted.
“We are working hard to make the most of the Milei administration's commitment to this collaboration.
“We have been busy meeting with the new government and hosting high-level delegations from Washington coming to examine specific areas where we can move forward,” she added.
Stanley listed the visits to Argentina by his government officials, including Secretary of State
Antony Blinken.
And with his words he gave signs that, in the last year of Joe Biden's first government - if he wins over Trump - or in the last year - if he loses -
the Democratic administration will continue to support Milei's government
.
On the contrary, the presidential response a few weeks ago was that of a meeting with Trump within the framework of a summit of conservative leaders, in which the Argentine president told the Republican, his leader, that he hoped to see him again as president of the USA.
Stanley spoke of the bilateral agenda by stating that the Blinken - Milei meeting discussed American priorities, from human rights to trade, including Ukraine and climate change.
He emphasized Blinken's interest in the critical minerals sector in reference to lithium and anticipated a trade mission of American companies that will visit Santiago, Montevideo and Buenos Aires in August 2025.
And he did not miss the opportunity to send another message: he talked about intellectual property rights and data.
Then he said Argentina was taking a "big step" in that sense to protect its 5G network from potential risks, and in that sense he mentioned the Chinese company Huawei, which the United States sees as a strong rival.
