A paramedic from Potsdam has a driving license, but without a first aid course he is denied a driving license.
He needs this for his job.
Potsdam – There has been a lot of discussion about driving licenses recently.
The EU reform includes health checks for seniors.
This causes massive criticism.
Just like the high costs for a driving license: new drivers now have to fork out up to 4,500 euros to get a driving license.
A paramedic from Potsdam has already paid for his driver's license.
Nevertheless, he faces a problem: his certificate is not recognized because he has not taken a first aid course.
To drive an ambulance, paramedics need a class C1 driving license.

“That just stuns me,” says Bjoern Baron in an interview with
Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten (PNN)

He has been a paramedic for 30 years, even has additional qualifications as a training paramedic and teaches first aid courses himself.
Nevertheless, the authorities in Potsdam refused to recognize his truck driving license.
He completed this many years ago in South Africa, where he grew up.
According to

, in September 2023 he applied for the license to be converted into the so-called C1E driving license.
“Despite repeated attempts to submit official documents and personal statements, the clerks rejected the application once again,” the paper quoted the paramedic as saying.
You can usually drive abroad with a national or international driving license
As the ADAC explains on its website, the first aid course required to obtain a driving license is the same for all driving license classes.
It includes a total of nine teaching units and can be completed within one day.
According to ADAC, the certificate for a first aid course is issued without a time limit - that is, it doesn't matter how old the course is.
C1E driving license
The class C1E driving license is a truck driving license that is based on the class C1 driving license.
Classes B and C1 can be driven with the C1E driving license.
For example, cars can be driven with trailers weighing up to 8.5 tons.

As a result, people can get a driver's license if they took the course years ago, while obstacles are put in the way of a paramedic - for whom carrying out life-saving measures is part of their everyday life.
According to the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, the following normally applies: If drivers have a “valid national or international driving license(s), you are allowed to drive motor vehicles in the Federal Republic of Germany of the classes for which your driving license is issued.” Most recently, the EU decided, that drivers who speed abroad lose their driving license in all countries.

, Baron ultimately decided
to reissue the C1E driver's license.
After there were problems here again because the paramedic had to present a certified paramedic certificate, months later he finally had his German truck driving license in his hands.
This allows him to work in the emergency services in Potsdam.
