A pair of twins met after 81 years of not seeing each other, and they said it felt like they were "meeting for the first time".

Maurilia Chavez and 90-year-old Andrea Lopez reunited in December after a DNA test revealed their relationship.

"It was like the first time I see her in my life, because 81 years is too long... I only remember her very, very slowly," Lopez told Channel 9 News. The

twins were only five years old when their parents died - and they and the rest of the family 10 of them were split between relatives and the connection was severed.

The last time they saw each other was when they were nine and their siblings met and spent a day together.

And the memory of that parting still hurts them to this day.

"I couldn't do anything because I lived with my uncle and aunt and she moved to Colorado," Lopez said.

After the genetic test found a match, sister Lopez, who lives in Las Vegas, booked a plane ticket to Denver to visit her long-lost twin, the New York Post reported.

"My little sister, I really wanted to see you, to be with me, my beautiful little sister," Lopez said when they were reunited.

"I thought I would never see her again. We would never be together," Chavez said.

Before the meeting, the sisters spent hours talking on the phone and said that at first they hardly recognized each other because their voices had changed so much since they were children.

Then they met and started making up for all the lost time - they even slept together in a double bed, which Lopez admitted she fell out of during the night but didn't care, as all the sisters want to do is make up for lost time.

"I am the happiest person in the world because I never thought I was going to see her again. The second reason I cry like a baby is that I was lonely. I have a beautiful family, but what I really needed was my sister," Chavez said.
