A basking shark measuring eight meters long has been spotted in the Gulf of Trieste, not seen since 2015. This was announced by the Miramare Marine Reserve, specifying that, despite the fear it may arouse due to its size and the fin that emerges from the surface of the sea, this animal is absolutely harmless.
"The sighting of a basking shark (ℎ ) between Santa Croce and Marina di Aurisina it is splendid news for the Gulf of Trieste and its biodiversity - comment the experts from the Miramare Marine Reserve - and gives signs of hope for species that are increasingly threatened throughout the Mediterranean".
The observation was considered rare, considering, in fact, that the last one dates back to 2015, always in the same waters.
The basking shark - cetorino - is the largest fish in the world after the whale shark) and feeds exclusively on plankton and minimally on small fish.
For experts, however, "its conservation is worrying, like that of many other species of sharks and rays, it is considered at risk.
We hope it will come back to visit us", is the hope that concludes the note.
