Carlo, a 71-year-old chief brigadier on leave from the Carabinieri ROS, does not consider himself "a hero", but he saved a 41-year-old woman of Albanian origins who risked being hit by an SUV driven by one of his 50 year old compatriot, in Novi Ligure (Alessandria).

The attacker was arrested by the police on charges of attempted murder.

The carabiniere on leave was walking along Viale Aurelio Saffi yesterday afternoon, "I saw the woman who was distraught - he told the microphones of Ore14, on Rai2 - then I saw the car on the avenue which passed at full speed, made a U-turn and I knew something was about to happen.

The car hit a bench and a fountain.

Then I saw the woman on the ground and I thought of an illness - continued the former carabiniere - I saw the man get out of the car and grab the woman by the hair and beat her, punching her in the face.

I intervened and stopped him.

He tried to escape in the car, but I stopped him again and handed him over to the police who had arrived on site.

If I hadn't been there he would have killed her", concludes the retired carabiniere.
