More helpers and interpreters are needed: This is the result of the 21st Integration Forum that recently took place in Geretsried.

Geretsried - At the last, the 21st integration forum, which the Youth and Social Work Association (TVJA) organized on Thursday evening in the cafeteria of the Karl Lederer School, the end was all about the beginning again.

What makes it easier for refugees and helpers to arrive?

What does a welcoming culture look like?

The participants addressed these questions in small groups.

Thanks to the Integration Active Coordination Office

Rudi Mühlhans, managing director of the sponsoring association, was pleased to be able to welcome so many full-time and volunteer workers as well as numerous people from Ukraine and other countries: “At the end, that is once again a good mix of those responsible and those affected.”

As reported, the TVJA returned the “Active Integration” (IAG) area to the city at the end of 2023 because the city did not grant the association the requested increase in staff and would instead prefer to (again) set up a position in the town hall itself.

Mayor Michael Müller thanked IAG – currently headed by Franziska Walter and Adriana Haug – for the past twelve years.

The town hall is currently preparing everything for the asylum department, he said.

When so many asylum seekers arrived in 2015, Suzan Jarrar was in charge.

It was then dissolved again.

More refugees than in 2015

At the moment even more people are arriving than in 2015. “It’s about the sheer accommodation,” said the mayor.

He paid the district administration the greatest respect because it had to distribute the refugees despite increasing resistance from some municipalities.

Müller: “I also don’t have an answer to the question of what should happen next.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look for answers.”

Integration Aktiv and the many helpers are not concerned with the “sheer accommodation”.

They want the newly arrived people to feel comfortable and find their way in Geretsried right from the start.

Franziska Walter said that there are brochures and apps (“Arrival”, “Integreat”) in several languages, but personal support when dealing with authorities, visiting the doctor, in kindergarten and school is often important.

Walter and Haug reported that they had carried out a survey among refugees in January and February, which confirmed this: “The result was that more helpers and more interpreters are needed.” Rudi Mühlhans added that he was happy about everyone who was doing well here arrive.

Anyone who fits in, finds work and a connection benefits society, not least because they pay into the pension fund.

Need for improvement in recognition procedures

The workshop participants see a need for improvement in the recognition procedures, which they believe take too long, in the so-called bridge classes for refugees, in which there are too many students who are only allowed to move to regular classes after two years, and in the cramped conditions of the collective accommodation no privacy allowed.

Decentralized accommodation was a widely expressed wish – both from helpers and residents.

The volunteers suggested training so that they could help more specifically.

Rudi Mühlhans wished the city of Geretsried “good luck with the herculean task of integration.”
