The last generation enters the political struggle.

Their declaration of war: shake up parliament.

The first hurdles for the EU elections have been overcome.

Berlin – Under the name “Shaking up Parliament – Voice of the Last Generation”, the Last Generation wants to enter the EU Parliament as a different political association (SPV).

After the association had already received 50,000 euros in donations six hours after the announcement, the Last Generation now also cleared the second hurdle: 8,800 signatures for the election proposal were collected within four weeks.

It is becoming increasingly realistic that the so-vilified “climate gluers” have a chance of taking part in the European elections.

In order to submit an election proposal for the entire federal territory, 4,000 signatures are required.

This second hurdle was overcome with ease.

The election proposal is to be handed over to the Federal Returning Officer on March 15th, after which the Federal Election Committee will check whether the last generation will be allowed to vote.

As a sign of democracy, the last generation called for demonstrations on the following Saturday.

“Becoming ignorable”: Civil resistance in the EU Parliament for more visibility

“If you no longer want to be part of a destructive system, you have to actively oppose it.

Civil resistance, whether on the streets, in the courts or in parliament, is our greatest hope.

Thank you for taking part!” said the EU’s top candidate of the last generation, Lina Johnsen, in a press release.

“We are at a point in human history where everything we love is at risk, and we must do everything peacefully possible to make resistance to the destruction of our civilization impossible to ignore,” said the second candidate on the list , Theodor Schnarr on the Last Generation website.

A total of twelve candidates have been chosen for the SPV list.

In its program, the Last Generation advocates, among other things, social councils, an exit from fossil fuels and social justice.

The program is concise with just four points, but it deals with the big topics of democracy, climate change and the social question.

250,000 votes needed for a seat – but financial support for the last generation is also possible

There is no threshold for the European elections in June, but for a seat the last generation would have to receive 250,000 votes. According to

dpa

, the association sees this as realistic.

Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen - the signatures for the election proposal do not oblige people to vote for the SPV.

In the surveys for the European elections, the association only appears under “Other”.

According to the press release, 150 volunteers helped in the election campaign.

If it is not enough for places in the EU Parliament, the movement would at least have financial support through participation in the elections: around one euro per vote per year for the first four million valid list votes, if over 0.5 percentage points are reached.

Each additional vote brings 83 cents annually.

In addition, there is 0.45 euros for every euro received as a contribution or donation.
