Ultra-broadband is the main player in the development of territories.

This was discussed during the event which took place on 12 March at the Palazzo della Regione Valle d'Aosta, an opportunity to take stock of the progress of the BUL (Ultra Broad Band) plan for the creation of the fiber network very high speed FTTH (Fiber To The Home) optics in the Alpine region and explain the benefits for citizens, businesses and public administrations.

“2024 - said Andrea Falessi, director of Open Fiber External Relations - will be the year of completion of the interventions for the installation of the infrastructure for this Region.

Complex interventions, both due to the orography of this region and some characteristics, especially the availability of workforce".

The new network will remain publicly owned, while Open Fiber will take care of management and maintenance for 20 years.

An FTTH fiber optic network capable of reaching speeds of up to 2.5 Gigabits per second in the Aosta Valley area.

The event was divided into a morning session, addressed to trade associations, condominium administrators and municipal councilors, and an afternoon dedicated to the mayors of the Aosta Valley municipalities.

On this occasion, the state of progress of the BUL Plan in the Region and the next developments in the municipalities not yet connected were illustrated.

“Open Fiber - said Luciano Caveri, Valle d'Aosta regional councilor for Innovation - is about to conclude its work by covering a very important part of Aosta Valley homes and also of different housing situations, such as tourist ones.

This project still has the handicap of poor participation by citizens and businesses in obtaining the advantages of optical fiber through the commercial offers of telephone operators present in the area".

There are 68 Aosta Valley municipalities involved in the BUL project for a total of approximately 570 km of infrastructure to be built.

In particular, there are 51 municipalities already available for sale with over 32,000 homes, offices and Public Administration offices reached by the FTTH fiber optic network.

For Alex Micheletto, president of Celva (Consortium of local authorities of the Aosta Valley) “the importance of the ultra-broadband infrastructure for our region at this moment is truly of primary importance considering that, due to the geomorphological conformation of the our territory, the connection difficulties unfortunately still lead us to have a competitive gap with the rest of the national territory".

The issue of the low use of ultra-broadband infrastructure in Italy, despite availability being "close to the average of European countries", was illustrated by Andrea Falessi.

In addition to promoting events dedicated to information,

the director of External Relations Open Fiber suggests "an orderly path of switching off the old copper networks and migrating towards FTTH fiber optic networks where they guarantee full coverage of the territory.

This, as happened in the past for digital terrestrial, would in our opinion be the objective with which to make the country's digital transition more achievable and closer, with its positive effects both on the performance of the economy and on socio-economic transformation" .
