First of all, the positive news: The myth of the fat Bavarian is refuted by the numbers in the study.

Bavaria is the second thinnest federal state in Germany.

Munich – On the occasion of “Healthy Eating Day”, Barmer published its morbidity and social atlas.

The BR also reported on this.

According to the current figures (they come from 2021), Bavaria is far below the national average when it comes to obesity (morbid overweight).

On average, twelve percent fewer people in the Free State suffer from obesity than the general German population.

Meanwhile, only Baden-Württemberg is ahead of Bavaria.

Bavaria is the second thinnest country in Germany - but with a big gap

On average, out of 1,000 people in Germany, 26.41 people are morbidly overweight.

In Bavaria it is 23.28.

However, a clear gap is visible within the Free State.

In the north, some districts are sometimes well above the national average.

For example Haßberge (50 percent above the national average), Schweinfurt-Stadt (+58 percent) and Kronach (+41 percent).

The second fewest people in Germany who are overweight live in Bavaria.

But there is also a strong disparity within the Free State.

Overall, a large proportion of the districts in the north are above the national average - while in the south there are only two districts that affect this: Rosenheim (+5 percent) and Mühldorf am Inn (+12 percent).

The lowest below the national average are Starnberg (-45 percent), Miesbach (-43 percent), Fürstenfeldbruch and Munich City (both -42 percent).

Further figures in Barmer's morbidity and social atlas - money and education make big differences

According to Barmer-Atlas, the population group most affected by obesity is between 60 and 69 years old - there are 43.20 people per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by 70 to 79 (38.85) and 50 to 59 (36.36).

Barmer also breaks down the obesity distribution in Bavaria according to educational qualifications, industry, income and group of people.

Here the numbers show: Most people who are morbidly overweight are unemployed (49.89) or receive social assistance (48.89).

The numbers are also high for people without an educational qualification (338.60) and with a secondary school qualification (36.48).

When it comes to income, the distribution is also clear: with an income of less than 15,000 euros, 28.77 people per 1,000 are obese.

However, the highest level is with an annual income of 15,000 to 20,000 euros (31.63).

The reason for this difference is probably that in the lowest income bracket, students with working student and mini-jobs also count - and this group of people (students) has by far the lowest obesity average (3.11).

When it comes to the industry, the distribution doesn't show that big of a difference.

The proportion of people with morbid obesity is highest in public administration, defense, social security, extraterritorial organizations and corporations (28.66), followed by health and social services (25.96) and education (24.07).

The figures are lowest in agriculture, forestry and fishing (17.91), followed by hospitality (18.49) and mining, energy and water supply, waste disposal and construction (19.17).
