“Where were you when they confined us on March 14?”
That was the question raised during the tribute ceremony for the fight against the coronavirus, held this Wednesday at the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute, four years after the appearance offered by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to announce the start of the State of alarm.
A question that has been followed by the exciting memories of six citizens with diverse stories.
Also Sánchez's own experience, who has claimed during his speech the "solidarity" response of his Council of Ministers and the European Union in the measures applied against the pandemic, in the face of the cuts made during the financial crisis by the "men of black".
“We didn't know it then, but that was the day we started to win,” Sánchez said about March 14, 2020, the day he offered the “most difficult” appearance he has had to face during his three terms in office. of the Executive.
“That is why I want to claim this collective achievement before society, before an exemplary citizenry, who in the hardest moment demonstrated commitment, maturity and temperance like no one could have imagined before.
Thank you very much Spain,” added the president.
In that intervention on March 14 four years ago, Sánchez recounted the battery of measures derived from the State of Alarm, aimed at combating the covid-19 crisis and that represented a before and after “of a time that marked” the country.
In the front row, the first and second vice presidents, María Jesús Montero and Yolanda Díaz, listened to the president;
the Minister of Health, Mónica García, the epidemiologist Fernando Simón, and the director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero.
Sánchez attended the event after facing a muddy control session in Congress, in which he asked the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to demand the resignation of the president of the Community, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
The popular leader's partner is being investigated for a tax crime and falsification of a documentary allegedly committed during the pandemic, when he would have profited at least one million euros from collecting commissions on the sale of masks.
The president has thus responded to the attacks of the Popular Party for the alleged plot of the
Koldo case,
which the National Court is also investigating for the sale of medical supplies during the crisis.
At the end of the event, Sánchez and the ministers avoided evaluating the words of Díaz Ayuso, who appeared in Leganés at practically the same time to offload all responsibility on La Moncloa.
“There is a shady case involving all the powers of the State against my partner,” stated the Madrid president.

During his speech at the Cervantes Institute, Sánchez also criticized denialist behavior with vaccines against Covid-19, as well as measures such as group immunity.
The president has, on the other hand, praised the usefulness of confinement, the strength of the public health system, the reinforcement of the role of the State and the effectiveness of social benefits.
“In a democracy, when it comes to making decisions as hard as confinement, we are asked to convince that we are on the right side and that the enormous sacrifice is worth it,” he added.
