Peter Kloeppel is leaving “RTL Aktuell” after more than 30 years.

He also particularly remembers a breakdown that he experienced live on air.

Cologne – “RTL Aktuell” viewers will probably have to get used to never being greeted by Peter Kloeppel (65) when they turn on the news after more than 30 years.

“Mister News”, who has hosted the show since 1992, will be seen there for the last time at the end of August.

The end of an era in which one or two breakdowns happened - and one of them in particular will never be forgotten.

Peter Kloeppel will probably remember this breakdown at “RTL Aktuell”.

On July 11, 2021, Peter Kloeppel, who has been married to an American for more than 30 years, was moderating the Sunday edition of “RTL Aktuell” when it suddenly became dark in the studio.

But even these considerable technical difficulties could not stop him from doing his job.

“If you don't see me anymore, but you might hear me, then I can tell you that the lights have gone out here in the studio,” the news anchor explained to his viewers at the time.

For the now 65-year-old, there was no reason to stop the broadcast: “We’ll just carry on,” he said, shining his smartphone in his face so that at least that could be seen.

Moderator Andreas von Thien (57) also had to come to terms with the situation: “We now have sport during a power outage.

We haven't had that at 'RTL aktuell' in many decades.”

Peter Kloeppel stayed in the studio despite the fire alarm

The reason why the studio remained dark until the end of the program was a power outage following a short circuit with smoke that triggered a fire alarm.

“But at least our control room and our broadcast processing and everything have an emergency generator.

That’s why you can still see and hear us,” Kloeppel explained the situation to the audience.

Despite being ordered to leave the building, the news presenter and his team remained calm and held the fort until security gave the all-clear.

Even though Kloeppel's commitment to his job was very high, a nice, probably somewhat quieter phase of life awaits him after his departure from “RTL Aktuell”.

As he revealed to “Stern”, he wants to live mostly in the USA in the future and spend more time with his wife and daughter.

Ulrike von der Groeben is also leaving “RTL Aktuell” with Peter Kloeppel.
