The sculpture of a flute player adorns the fountain at Mayor-Schaegger-Platz in Schongau.
But the place is currently deserted.
The figure should be cleaned and repaired.
Schongau – “Pretty dilapidated,” is how Thomas Ola from the Schongau city building department describes it, was the internal water pipe of the striking fountain figure that can usually be found on Mayor-Schaegger-Platz: a shawm blower, leaning against a tree fragment with water-spouting birds.
However, due to corrosion, the figure's distribution pipes became leaky, which meant that the gargoyles could no longer be supplied with water and were no longer functional.
The city now wants to use the spring months to repair the flute player figure made of cast bronze.
It is currently in the construction yard workshop, where the pipes are to be replaced by a local plumber.
In addition, a restorer from the region will take care of the flute player and clean the figure of dirt and heavy calcification, explains Ola.
The Flute Player Fountain in Schongau is being repaired
The construction of the 1.6 meter high sculpture and its recommissioning - as well as the repair of the fountain basin as part of the cleaning work, which, according to Ola, needs to be clarified in more detail as to what is necessary - should then take place in the spring.
The flute player was designed by the Schongau sculptor Hans Horst Beckert (born 1902, died 1986).
He originally designed the flute player or a shawm player in 1971 as a gift for the English twin town of Abingdon, as can be read in the local newspaper's report on the inauguration of the fountain in Schongau's old town.
However, the plan in the era of Mayor Otto Ranz quickly fell apart.
Artwork should delight viewers
In 1983, the Schongau town hall was faced with the question of whether to destroy the old mold or have the fountain poured.
Mayor Luitpold Braun opted for the latter option, with the then Kreissparkasse Schongau taking over the financing.
So, 15 years after the project was created, the figure was erected on Lechtorstrasse and ceremoniously inaugurated on May 15, 1985.

But why did artist Beckert design a shawm blower back then?
It was a lyrical and artistic representation without reference to a place or an event, he explained at the inauguration.
The work of art only wants to delight the viewer because of its design and the water features.
And she should do that again soon.
