Rina, a company that operates in the naval engineering and consultancy sector, has been awarded a contract by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) to carry out a study aimed at directing the cruise industry's investment plan towards a sustainable future.

The research will outline the global scenario until 2050, mapping energy needs, infrastructure and regulations.

The cruise sector is recognized as one of the most active in driving the maritime industry towards greater sustainability.

Data shows 55 new cruise ships on order today, representing an investment of $37.1 billion globally over the next five years.

Of these, 36 will be powered by LNG and 7 will be ready to be powered by amethanol.

Over the same period, it is expected that 15% of cruise ships entering service will be equipped with batteries or fuel cells to enable hybrid energy generation.

It is also expected that, by 2028, more than 70% of the cruise ship fleet of Clia member companies will be equipped to receive power from shore when docked in port.

The study will cover all areas of the world outside of Europe and will focus on a holistic view of infrastructure and regulatory needs.

The objective is to map the current state and future developments of infrastructure and the use of alternative fuels over the next 5-10 years.

A particular focus will be dedicated to the impact of the itineraries of cruise ship operations, both at sea and in port.
