The southernmost of the three maple trees between the secondary school and the sidewalk on Prälatenweg has already been felled.
According to the district office, it became clear that this tree was “not only severely damaged in the root area, but also the entire trunk up to the branches showed severe damage.”

The news that three magnificent maple trees that shape the cityscape had to be felled to renovate the basement of the Weilheim secondary school shocked many Weilheim residents.

Weilheim – Three magnificent maple trees that shape the cityscape on Prälatenweg have to be felled for the renovation of the Weilheim secondary school: This news shocked many Weilheim residents three weeks ago (we reported).
But now there has been a surprising twist: two of the three huge trees between the school building and the sidewalk can remain standing - because no excavation is necessary to remediate the moisture in the basement of this secondary school wing.
Planned work on the basement of the secondary school took place years ago
So far, as the district office responsible for the construction project explained when asked by our newspaper, “we assumed that we would have to excavate, seal and insulate the basement external walls from the outside”.
This would have required excavator and truck work in the root area of the trees, which in turn would have endangered their stability.
But, the district office continued: “We only recently learned that, contrary to our previous information, this work had already been carried out as part of the II economic stimulus package in 2009.” Therefore, the planned moisture remediation now has to be carried out “only internally” - without excavating Outside.
There was no saving any of the three huge maple trees
Those responsible are pleased “to be able to preserve two large maple trees, which are a defining feature of the cityscape at this point,” “for a longer period of time.”
However, for the southernmost of these trees - which, by the way, are located exactly on the property boundary with the sidewalk and therefore "half belong to the city of Weilheim", as the district office emphasizes - there was no rescue: it was removed a few days ago because its roots were in the The foundation area of the covered bicycle parking spaces planned in this area protruded into it.
Two replacement plantings planned
During the felling, it became apparent that this tree was not only severely damaged in the root area (as a previous assessment had already shown), but that the entire trunk up to the branches also showed severe damage.
“This confirms that the felling of this tree was important for traffic safety in the school, sidewalk and parking area,” explains the authority’s press office.
And she assures that once the construction work and the new bike racks are completed, “two replacement plantings will be made for this one tree.”
