On the way to the White House: United States President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won the primaries tonight (Wednesday), each in his party, and will compete head-to-head in the first American presidential election.
This will be the first time in 70 years that the same main candidates will compete head to head in two consecutive elections.
Biden needed 1,968 delegates to win the Democratic nomination - and he reached that goal tonight, with the results of the Georgia primary.
He also won the vote in Mississippi, Washington, D.C., the Northern Mariana Islands and among party members living outside the state.
Hours later, Trump amassed the 1,215 delegates needed to secure the Republican presidential nomination in primaries held in four states, including Georgia, where the former president faces criminal charges for his efforts to overturn the state's 2020 results.
In all, 161 stakes were at stake tonight in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi and Washington state.
