Moosburg

- This strange report made headlines across the country: As reported, on Sunday a Moosburg resident ran into a monkey on his terrace, which was then caught with the help of a banana and taken to the Munich reptile rescue station.

Since then, many have been wondering where this exotic animal comes from.

The question has now been clarified: “On Tuesday evening, the owner of the marmoset appeared at the Moosburg police station with the necessary documents after her daughter found out about the incident through reports,” the officials report.

Since, according to current knowledge, the species protection requirements have been met, the monkey could also be handed over to the Moosburg woman, according to the police.

Monkey in Moosburg: Well cared for – less well accommodated?

What initially sounds like a good outcome could have consequences.

Because in the rescue station they are not convinced about this form of animal husbandry, as spokeswoman Jennifer Vogl says: “There is probably only one animal registered there, and the monkey is apparently also kept in the apartment.

Since these animals live in groups in nature, they should only be kept in groups.”

Due to the good condition of the marmoset and the woman's descriptions, one has the impression "that the animal is not doing badly, is being well looked after and feels comfortable with the woman," explains Vogl.

Nevertheless, the responsible veterinary office will be informed and asked to check the species protection regulations on site.

The spokeswoman for the Munich reptile rescue center also makes it clear: “We are only guardians of the animals and are not allowed to decide whether an animal comes back into the household or not.”

As we learned, Kleo - the monkey's name - has been living with the Moosburg family for around six years.

After being taken to the reception center on Sunday as a result of being found on someone else's terrace, Kleo had to spend the time in the mandatory quarantine for new arrivals.

“The monkey was not very happy with the situation in an unknown environment and was already scared,” reports Vogl.

“But you also noticed that it has a very good connection to people.” Kleo was fed fruit and vegetables – and grasshoppers.

“She thought it was great,” says Vogl and laughs.

Animal rights activists want to involve the authorities and hope for a happy ending

As she says, it is still uncertain how the responsible authority will react.

“We can only provide information here and hope that appropriate checks will be carried out and conditions will be imposed.” And: “Of course we hope that the lady will then fulfill these and there will be a happy ending.” In the conversation when we picked up the monkey The woman definitely “showed interest in improving the situation.”

Now the monkey owner has to pay a bill from the rescue center, as Jennifer Vogl says.

“The initial examinations and accommodation cost between 120 and 150 euros.”
