The warning day will be significantly quieter in Munich than in the rest of Bavaria - because no sirens will be heard in the state capital.

This has to do with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Munich - When all cell phones suddenly start ringing and vibrating on Thursday, March 14th at 11 a.m., you shouldn't panic: because nothing bad has happened, it's just another Bavaria-wide warning day.

The warning day is organized by the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior - and of course not for fun, but to check the functionality of the warning system and to rehearse warning the population.

Since the 1990s, the Munich warning system no longer includes sirens

However, sirens, as in most other places in Bavaria, will not be heard in the urban area of Munich.

And there is a simple reason for this: “The warning system in Munich has not included sirens since the 1990s,” explains the press office of the Munich fire department when asked by tz.de.

The air raid sirens, which had previously been operated for civil defense purposes, were no longer considered necessary and dismantled by the federal and state governments due to the abolition of the “Iron Curtain” and the associated east-west rapprochement, according to the fire department press office.

Warning via message and alarm on the cell phone

But of course the people of Munich are warned even without sirens.

With the so-called cell broadcast, which has been around since last year, the Ministry of the Interior sends a message with an alarm sound to all mobile devices at 11 a.m. sharp.

But be careful: Not every cell phone is suitable for cell broadcast, because this is only possible with smartphones.

Anyone who also has a warning app on their device will also receive a warning here.

Common warning apps are NINA, KATWARN or BIWAPP.

The fire department press office also announced that the warning should also be displayed on information boards.
