The revolutionary Einstein on the Beach, created by Philip Glass with Robert Wilson in collaboration with Lucinda Childs as choreographer and performer in 1976, will be just the beginning of the Dancing Glass show event, which will be staged on March 27th and repeated on March 28th in Rome, at 9pm in the Auditorium della Nuvola, as part of Eur Culture, the cultural event of Eur SpA. Presenting in Rome the emotional homage to the American composer at the origin of minimal music is Lucinda Childs, with that grace and humility that only a true and award-winning icon of world dance can have says: "Glass was my first composer. I am 83 years old and I have collaborated with him for 50, but I assure you that the amazement and emotion for his music have never failed. You can imagine the importance of this project for me and the pride of having been able to bring new creations."
"We are happy to have a dance legend like Lucinda Childs. Glass is one of the few composers at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries who has broken down boundaries with creations that find echoes in musical heritage around the world but also genres having composed for cinema, theatre, video art..." explained Franco Laera, director of Change Performing Arts, creator and co-producer of the project.
"For me it's a 40-year career dream coming true, I had never dared to approach the master" says Michele Pogliani, former dancer in the Einstein on the Beach world tour and now head of the Roman formation MP3 Dance Project which will interpret all the choreography.
The show will be composed of new creations in dialogue with Glass's Etudes by the Brazilian Cassi Abranches of the famous Grupo Corpo complex, by the Japanese Shintaro Hirahara, author of the choreographies for the Tokyo Olympic ceremonies, by Michele Pogliani, and with the participation of the South African performer Llewellyn Mnguni.
At the piano the young talent Jacopo Petrucci.
For the video-art component, the famous Iranian-American video artist, Shirin Neshat, Golden Lion at the Venice Art Biennale in 1999, the Japanese Hiroshi Sugimoto, Praemium Imperiale in 2009, the multimedia artist Fabio Cherstich will take part in the two events and the Italian collective Anagoor, which has established itself on the international scene thanks to the contamination between theatre, video art and performance.
The multicultural musical references of Philip Glass are evoked by the original arrangements of the Turkish musician Kudsi Erguner, greatest exponent of the Sufi musical tradition, by the South African composer Philip Miller, known for his activity alongside William Kentridge, by Roberta Cuña Valente with the his Brazilian music ensemble "Choro", by Mana Yoshinaga, virtuoso of the kotò (the traditional Japanese instrument) and, finally, by Anna-Liisa Eller virtuoso of the kannel (traditional instrument of Estonia),
who will exceptionally close the two events with his live performance.
The project was commissioned and co-produced by Eur Spa for Eur Culture, Eesti Kontsert / Tallinn Estonia and Csiaf China Shanghai International Arts Festival, Teatro Comunale di Bologna and made use of the partnership of the A. Casella de l'Aquila Conservatory and the precious collaboration of Verbania where Dancing Glass was prepared and where in June, before an international tour, the first Italian repeat will be held.
