"It is possible to reduce CO2 emissions from the transport sector by 50% by 2030. But 50% of mobility by that date will still depend on fossil fuels."
Roberto Tomasi, CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia (Aspi) said this at the Forum for sustainable intermodality in Rome.
"Electric is certainly a third of this reduction - continued Tomasi - the renewal of the car fleet needs acceleration. It is essential to have a rapid charging network, and we are investing in this. Biofuels are another third of the solution, but also we must support these, and we must increase production. The last third of the reduction will come from digital: a lot can be done on the efficiency of travel, and for a digital infrastructure it takes much less time than, for example, for the Gronda di Genova".
"Road transport covers 84.4% of the mobility needs of goods - said Tomasi -. If we think of displacing mobility on other modes of transport, we will not be able to reach the objective, the motorway network fulfills a non-substitutable role We need to regenerate it, modernizing and strengthening the infrastructure, to give it back another 50 years of life (as we are doing). And the joint commitment of sector operators is necessary to renew the network and develop the supply chain of the various energy carriers".
For Tomasi "cutting transport emissions by 50% would be like multiplying rail transport seven times".
