The next few days will also be difficult for tens of thousands of air travelers.

The Verdi union has called on security personnel to go on strike.

Berlin/Frankfurt - Tens of thousands of passengers will have to prepare for flight cancellations and delays again in the coming days.

The Verdi union has called for warning strikes by aviation security staff at five German airports this Thursday (March 14).

According to estimates by the airport association ADV, around 90,000 travelers alone will be affected, and more than 580 flight connections are likely to be canceled.

The two-day strike by Lufthansa cabin crew in Frankfurt and Munich could also have repercussions.

After the end of this strike, Lufthansa believes that passengers will still have to expect delays and flight cancellations in some cases.

Restrictions for passengers on Friday too

Even this Friday (March 15), passengers in Germany cannot expect to reach their destination as planned: Verdi has called for further warning strikes by aviation security staff on Friday.

According to Verdi, it will then gradually affect the airports of Hanover, Dortmund, Weeze, Dresden, Leipzig and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden.

Hannover Airport announced: “For this reason, no departures will be possible on Friday, March 15, 2024 between 00:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Arrivals are not affected.”

According to Verdi, the all-day strike by aviation security forces on Thursday will gradually affect Hamburg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Cologne and Berlin airports over the course of the night.

Passengers can then no longer come into the security area.

Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt is not affected by the warning strikes by aviation security staff on Thursday and Friday.

At Munich Airport, Verdi called on employees in personnel and goods control as well as cargo control to go on strike from Thursday at 4:00 a.m. to Friday at 6:00 a.m.

This particularly affects the freight sector.

The collective bargaining in aviation security concerns the working conditions of around 25,000 employees of private security service providers.

On behalf of the Federal Police, they check passengers, staff and luggage at the entrances to the security area.

So far, five rounds of negotiations have failed to produce any results in the conflict.

Verdi is calling for an hourly wage increase of 2.80 euros over a period of twelve months, with overtime bonuses starting more quickly from the first hour of overtime.

“The employers recently presented an improved but still inadequate offer.

We can’t get together like that,” said Verdi negotiator Wolfgang Pieper.

According to their own information, the aviation security companies (BDLS) offered 2.70 euros in three levels.

“We are talking about 2.70 euros more per hour within 13 months.

“That would have been individual increases in monthly wages between EUR 432 and EUR 470,” said BDLS negotiator Frank Haindl on Wednesday.

The collective agreement should have a term of 24 months.

A sixth hearing is scheduled for March 20th.

Associations: Strike wave has reached a new dimension

The German aviation industry has reached a new dimension.

With currently 16 waves of strikes in six tariff areas, the number of strikes this year already exceeds the level of previous years, criticized the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry (BDL).

Rules of procedure are necessary, said Managing Director Matthias von Randow.

Before traffic comes to a standstill due to strikes, the association believes that in the future there should at least be an attempt at mediation in the area of critical transport infrastructure.

Lufthansa between strikes and collective bargaining

Lufthansa is currently being hit particularly hard.

The airline's cabin crew went on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The UFO union called on flight attendants from Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline to go on strike at Frankfurt Airport and a day later at Munich Airport, from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.

UFO is essentially demanding 15 percent more money for an 18-month contract period for Lufthansa's approximately 18,000 cabin employees and the almost 1,000 employees of its regional subsidiary Cityline.

The union also wants to achieve an inflation compensation bonus of 3,000 euros and higher allowances.

The collective bargaining dispute among Lufthansa ground staff is still unresolved.

Last week, hundreds of Lufthansa flights were canceled in this area due to a warning strike organized by Verdi.

The collective bargaining negotiations for the approximately 25,000 ground workers entered the next round on Wednesday, and both sides blocked a continuation of the talks this Thursday (March 14).

Verdi is charging 12.5 percent more money for Lufthansa ground staff for a term of twelve months, while the company has previously offered 10 percent for a term of 28 months.

After four rounds of negotiations, an inflation compensation bonus of 3,000 euros is comparatively undisputed.

The Lufthansa subsidiary Discover, which has 24 aircraft, has also recently had repeated strikes.

The Cockpit Association (VC) wants to force a first collective agreement for the approximately 420 pilots there.

Lufthansa's human resources director Michael Niggemann had appealed to the unions: "Last year's results show it: If we work together when we fly, then we can achieve these record profits." Strikes are "the wrong way, striking burns money." .
