Seagulls are a thorn in the side of many beach visitors and residents.

In Denmark, seagulls can now legally be shot out of the sky.

Sonderburg – Seagulls like to steal fish sandwiches from vacationers on the Baltic Sea.

They also leave behind their legacy in many places and cause problems for visitors and residents.

Denmark therefore now wants to take action against the birds.

Holidaymakers don't just find seagulls extremely annoying.

In the Danish city of Sønderborg the birds have become a real nuisance.

The seagulls are targeting residents and tourists, according to the administration in Sønderborg.

The city on the border with Germany has now released the pests for shooting.

Herring gulls may be shot with weapons from February 1st until April 15th.

As the administration in Sonderburg writes, the seagulls can also be controlled with traps.

Those interested should note that they must obtain a permit before hunting herring gulls.

The reason why the seagulls are allowed to be shot is that they are running out of food in coastal areas.

“The seagulls are encroaching further and further into built-up areas, where they fish food from garbage cans, steal from plates in restaurants and steal eggs and young from smaller birds,” it says.

Seagulls are also becoming an increasingly serious problem in Venice.

Herring gulls can live up to 30 years, which is why it could take some time for the population to adapt to the food supply.

Even after April 15th, people in Sønderborg have the opportunity to defend themselves against the seagulls.

From April 1st to July 31st, herring gull eggs and nests may be destroyed.

From April 16th to August 31st, even young herring gulls can be controlled with firearms.

This is how people can defend themselves against seagulls on property:

  • Do not provide any opportunity for food, e.g. through birdhouses or open bins

  • Prevent seagulls from building nests on flat roofs by using a robotic lawnmower

  • Install bird spikes on vents and other shallow returns

  • Place a scarecrow or a moving bird in your garden

According to the Danish broadcaster DR, seagulls have been shot down in the city center of the nearby city of Aalborg for 20 years.

As stated, this has had little impact so far; the seagulls have always returned.

That is why funding for the city hunter is to be canceled from 2026.

In Sonderburg, the community hopes that a general shooting permit will improve the plague.
